STUDY and LEARN Are Not the Same Thing

If you are studying English and feel like nothing is improving, the problem may not be that you study too little. It may be that you are conflating two things that look alike and are not: STUDY and LEARN.

Studying is an activity

Studying is sitting at the desk, opening the book, opening the laptop, going to class, putting the video on.

But studying guarantees nothing. It is entirely possible to sit there all night and learn nothing at all.

Learning is the outcome

Learning is when you genuinely take something in, understand it, and can use it in the real world.

It happens anywhere, not only at a desk. And it usually follows from asking the right question.

Why people get stuck

Plenty of people study English diligently: a full set of flashcards, a beautifully kept notebook, no shortage of hours at the desk. And they still cannot produce a sentence outside, because no learning has actually taken place.

What is useful is that this distinction holds for anything you want to be good at: cooking, business, talking to people.

Not more study. Better learning.

Which one are you doing each day?
